Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship for researchers in Biotechnology

INTRODUCTION

The setting up of a separate Department of Biotechnology (DBT), under the Ministry of Science and Technology in 1986 gave a new impetus to the development of the field of modern biology and biotechnology in India. In more than a decade of its existence, the department has promoted and accelerated the pace of development of biotechnology in the country. Through several R&D projects, demonstrations and creation of infrastructural facilities a clear visible impact of this field has been seen. The department has made significant achievements in the growth and application of biotechnology in the broad areas of agriculture, health care, animal sciences, environment, and industry. Applications are invited for "Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship", a re-entry scheme of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. Objective: The scheme is aimed at bringing back researchers (Indian nationals) working overseas in various fields of biotechnology, including agriculture, health sciences, bio-engineering, energy, environment, bioinformatics and other related areas, who are desirous of pursing R&D in an Indian institution.

COURSE AND ELIGIBILITY

1.The applicant should possess a Ph.D., MD or equivalent degree with an outstanding track record as reflected in publications and other recognitions. 2. Only candidates (Indian nationals) working overseas are eligible to apply. Those who have already returned to India and are working in India are not eligible. 3. The upper age limit for applying is 55 years as on 31st August, 2011

CAREER PROSPECTS

The Department of Biotechnology has instituted a scheme known as "Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship" for Indian Nationals who are working overseas in various fields of biotechnology and life sciences and are interested in taking up scientific research positions in India. Ramalingaswami Re-entry fellows would be able to work in any of the scientific institutions/universities in the country and would also be eligible for regular research grant through extramural and other research schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.

PAY PACKAGE

Selected awardees will receive a fellowship amount of Rs. 75,000/ pm (consolidated) and House Rent Allowance of Rs. 7,500/- p.m. wherever host institute provides accommodation to the fellow, the HRA amount will be deducted by the institution. Besides, each fellow will also receive research/contingency grant of Rs. 5,00,000/ year for purchase of consumables, minor equipment, international and domestic travel, engaging manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with the implementation of research project.
